Pollution
We live in our home. We got oxygen from atmosphere. But we pollute the air, land and water in a number of ways. Smoke from factories and houses makes the air impure.
In industrial areas the air is polluted. This affects greatly plants and man's health. In densely populated cities the air becomes impure and man's health suffers. But fresh air is necessary for life.
In winter months, when fog is mixed with smoke, smog is caused. In our country, smog is caused in winter is industrial areas and densely populated cities. In cities and towns cars move to and fro. The smoke sent out by them contains highly poisonous gas and small particles of lead. Lead is extremely dangerous for health as it causes various diseases. Thus fumes from cars and trucks and poison to the air and affect not only plants and animals but men.
Over-crowding is our cities and growing towns is also an important cause of air pollution. People come to cities for various purposes. They do not go back to air become congested and the air becomes impure.
Pollution of air leads to leads to pollution of land. When it rains, the dangerous gases and particles of dust fall on the land with rain drops and pollute the land.
We need more and more land for growing crops for our people. As such, we clear large areas of forests. We forget that forests prevent strong wind from the trees make the soil fertile. The roots of the trees are cleared, the soil dies and the place becomes a desert. Today we use fertilizers to improve the quality of the soil and crop. We use insecticides to kill pests. These also pollute the air and the land.
We pollute the water by throwing waste into the river and the sea. Ships discharge oil. It pollutes the sea and kill fish. It also harms people who eat sea fish. Drains, big and small, discharge dirty and wastes into the river. These also pollute the river. Harmful chemicals and refuge from factories are also drained into the river. When fish and birds drink the impure water of the river, they die.
Population and pollution are rising at an alarming rate. In the year 2000, the population of the world will rise to 700 crores. It means we require more land under cultivation, more industries to feed and give employment. These will destroy the soil and pollute the air and water. So we are destroying ourselves.
We cannot live without live without fresh air, fertile soil and pure water. Hence, we must control our population and stop polluting the air, land and water.
