Sarojini Naidu
Sarojini Naidu was a freedom fighter. She was not only a great woman but also a social reformer. She was not a poet and an orator too. She was very bold. She was really great.
Sarojini was born at Hyderabad on February 13, 1879. Her father's name was Aghorenath Chsttopadhya. Her mother's name was Varada Sundari. Sarojini's parents came from undivided Bengal and lived in Hyderabad for a long time.
People from all walks of life visited her home. Her father welcomed the rich and poor, men and women, and young boys and girls. Congress workers, politicians, scientists, nawabs and Begums, all visited his house from time to time. So Sarojini was fortuned enough to see a mixture of various cultures at her home.
Her parents spoke to each other in Bengali. They spoke to the children in Hindustani but to their servants in Telugu. They loved all the Indian languages. Sarojini fluently sent to study in England. Her two brothers also got education there. The children were treated equally by their father.
Sarojini fell in love with Govindrajulu Naidu, a South Indian. Sarojini was a Brahmin from Bengal. But Naidu was a non-Brahmin from the south. Sarojini did not care for the caste or creed. She married Naidu before a Registrar.
Sarojini joined the Indian National Congress. She was the second woman President of the Congress. She fought for the freedom of India. She was sent to prison several times.
On 15th August, 1947, Indian became independent. She became Governor of Uttar Pradesh. She passed away on March 2, 1949.
