Ashoka the Great

Ashoka was one of the greatest kings of India. He ruled over India two thousand years of India. But his name is still alive.

He was the king of Magadh. Later, he extended his empire almost all over India. He was very brave.

Once, when he was fighting in Kalinga he was moved by the destruction caused by war. He vowed never to go the battlefield again. He became a follower of Lord Buddha. He spread Buddhism in many countries of Asia.

He was very kind at heart. He loved his subjects as a father loves his children. He did many things for the benefit of his people. he gave peace and happiness to them.

He erected many stupas and pillars on which the teachings of Lord Buddha are engraved. One such pillar is situated in Sarnath, Varanasi. It is know as Lion-pillar of Ashoka. The four-faced Lion of this pillar is now our national emblem. The 'chakra or the wheel of this pillar is in the center of our national flag.

Ashoka regarded himself as the servant of the people, and not an emperor. That is way he is called "Ashoka The Great".
