Kashmir

Jammu and Kashmir is one of the states of our country. It is situated in the north-west of India.

Kashmir is called the Switzerland of Asia. The picturesque valley of Kashmir nestles in the bosom of the lofty Himalayas. Kashmir is 'a paradise on earth.'

Srinagar, the capital of Jammu-Kashmir, is situated on the banks of Jhelum. This beautiful city is Kashmir's major attraction. It has the beautiful Dal Lake. It is often likened Venice. It has excellent hostels and houseboat accommodation. It is connected with Delhi by daily flights. The Kashmir University is an Srinagar.

The lovely gardens of Kashmir are well-known Beautiful flowers and fruits grow there. Kashmir apples are famous in India and abroad. The Nishat and the Shalimar are the two most beautiful Mughal gardens.

Gulmarg, the meadow of flowers of Kashmir, has one of the finest golf courses in the world. Pahagam, a beautiful town, is an ideal base for excursions and hiking. It is just the right place for anglers. It has Indian style hotels and a comfortable Dak Bungalow. Sonamarg, famous for its landscape, is fascinating. It is known as 'the golden meadow'.  Amarnath is a holy place.

Kashmiris are very handsome. The ladies are very fair and beautiful. People in Kashmir live in houses made of wood. These houses are built on the rivers and are called houseboats. These are comfortable and cheap. During winter Kashmir valley is covered with snow. People put on woolen clothes. Most of these, specially shawls, are exported to many countries.
