The Peacock

What a lovely bird the peacock is ! It is a charming bird. It is our national bird. The peacock has very long colourful feathers. It has a long and beautiful tail. Its feathers are colourful. Its tail is hidden under its feathers. What's that on its head? It is the plume. When a peacock is happy, it spreads its wings and begins to dance. It looks very fascinating then.

The peacock is a male bird. Its female is called a pea-hen. A pea-hen is not as beautiful as a peacock. It is ugly. It lays its egg in a hallow place on the ground and covers it with dry grass and leaves.

The peacock is a useful bird, too. It eats insects, worms, seeds, plants, fruits and snakes. It cannot fly too high because of its heavy body.

The peacock is a protected bird. Nobody is allowed to kill the peacock in India.
